Old Witta School Centenary, June 8th, 2025

Old Witta School Celebrates 100 Years of Education and Community

This year, The Old Witta School, a cherished historical landmark in the heart of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, celebrates the centenary of the opening of the current building, marking 100 years since Education Queensland saw fit to establish a permanent school in the Witta district. Opened in 1925, this building, now a local Community Centre, has played an integral role in the development of the Witta region, nurturing generations of students while fostering a strong sense of community spirit.

To commemorate this incredible milestone a Centenary Celebration on June 8th will be held at the Old Witta School grounds. Former students, staff, and the local community are invited to join in the festivities, which will include:

· An Historical Exhibition showcasing photos, artefacts, and stories from the school’s 100-year history.

· A Centenary Ceremony with speeches from local dignitaries, including members of the Witta community and past and present educators.

· Live Music and Entertainment with performances from local musicians, children’s activities, and refreshments.

· An Opportunity to wander the school grounds to note how much/little has changed in the last 100 years.

Over the decades, the school has evolved, adapting to the changing needs of the community, and in 1991, it was decommissioned as a regular school. However, its legacy lives on through its ongoing role as a community hub and its preservation as a heritage site.

The centenary marks not only the school’s enduring history but also the strong connections that have been formed over generations of students, families, and educators. Current and former Witta residents have shared countless memories of their time at the school, many of which will be highlighted during the celebratory events.

“We are incredibly proud of the Old Witta School’s legacy and its significant place in the history of our community,” said Grant Fincher, President of the Old Witta School Management Committee. “This building has been the heart of our local community for 100 years, and we are thrilled to bring together former students, staff, and residents to reflect on the school’s history and celebrate the contributions it has made to our lives.”

The Old Witta School building centenary is an opportunity for the community to reconnect, celebrate its shared history, and look ahead to the future with a renewed appreciation for the values of education, community, and heritage that have shaped the region over the past century.
